Once opened, we recommend you keep liquid milk replacer in the refrigerator for no more than 72 hours. Bacterial growth may occur once the product is opened or mixed and exposed to air. To be safe, it is recommended that your puppy or kitten receive fresh powder mixed with water (reconstituted) or complete liquid product that has been frozen (after opened) and not expired.

None of the ingredients used in our milk replacers should harm other mammals, but we cannot make feeding recommendations for species other than kittens and puppies. However, if you choose to feed our milk replacers to another species, we suggest that before doing so, you check with someone qualified to give you nutritional or health recommendations (veterinarian, zoologist) for that species. PetAg does have a line of specialty products (Zoologics) that may be used in place of one of our standard puppy or kitten milk replacers.

No, GMK & GME are commercially sterilized products, raw goat milk is unpasteurized. In the field of food processing, pasteurization is a process used in food preservation in which packaged and unpacked foods (milk) are treated with mild heat, usually to less than 100 °C (212 °F), to eliminate pathogens and extend shelf life. Sterilization is the complete destruction or elimination of all viable organisms in the product being sterilized. The process destroys yeasts, molds, vegetative bacteria, and allows the product to be stored and distributed at ambient temperatures, thus extending the shelf-life.

Raw goat milk (raw=unpasteurized) will meet the nutritional needs of goat kids, not kittens or puppies. GMK and GME compete liquids have been formulated to contain nutrient levels like those found in mother’s milk. These liquid products are a source of protein, fat, vitamins and minerals to kittens and puppies as they grow.

Goat’s Milk KMR (GMK) and Goat milk Esbilac (GME) are formulated using powdered milk products from goats as the main source of milk components. Types and quantities of fatty acids (the individual components of a fat) found in goat milk are different than those found in cow’s milk. The types of fatty acids found in goat milk improve the digestibility of the fat. Goat milk is also lower in lactose (milk sugar) than cow’s milk, making it less likely to cause digestive upset as the kitten or puppy gets older.

The PetAg product known as Bene-Bac contains the prebiotic fructooligosaccharide (FOS) and five probiotics. Prebiotics are non-digestible food ingredients that stimulate the growth and/or activity of beneficial microorganisms, such as bacteria, in the gut. FOS are a type of oligosaccharide composed of short chains of fructose (a type of sugar) molecules, and they serve as a substrate for beneficial bacteria in the gut, particularly bifidobacteria and lactobacilli (contained in Bene-Bac, classified as probiotics). No. Both liquid and powder milk replacers are perishable products that should not be fed after the expiration date.

No. We are required by regulations to show certain nutrient values on the label so that the consumer can see what the values for typical nutrients – crude protein, crude fat, crude fiber, moisture, energy (calories) – are in our products. We are also required to list the ingredients of the product on the label. The ingredients will show the consumer what additional vitamins and minerals are added to the product, but not the amounts in the finished product. The amount of individual nutrients that are in a product (other than those listed on the label) are what we call “proprietary”. In other words, not available to the consumer, even when requested.

No. If possible, puppies/ kittens should receive colostrum by nursing from their mother for a minimum of 2 days. Many milk replacers with added colostrum are derived from cow’s milk. Colostrum is species specific so the benefits to a puppy or kitten, if any, are difficult to determine.

Each of our PetAg formulas are formulated for the nutritional needs of the species, so they are not interchangeable.

We recommend that a newborn puppy or kitten be fed 2 tablespoons of ready to feed liquid or 2 tablespoons of reconstituted (water added to the powder to make a liquid) powder milk replacer for every 4 ounces of body weight over a 24-hour period. For example, if your puppy weighs 8 ounces it needs to be fed 4 tablespoons of formula over a 24 hour period.

After opening liquid KMR & Esbilac may be frozen for up to 6 weeks. Do not freeze formula in the original container, an ice cube tray is preferred. Formula must be frozen, after opening, within 72 hours to preserve freshness. (Please note once frozen the formula will darken in color, but after thawing will return to a lighter color)
