FAQs
We recommend using a shaker bottle if possible, however, a bowl and a whisk may also be used. The most important point to remember is that the powder needs to be completely dissolved in the water with no clumps in the finished liquid.
After opening the milk replacer powder, it can be stored at room temperature for up to 2 months. After 2 months, it can be kept an additional month if refrigerated. After that time, it is recommended that you no longer use the powder. Never use the powder beyond the “Best by date” stamped on the container.
When you read the Guaranteed Analysis on a can of liquid milk replacer and a can of powder milk replacer you are reading values for the product in that container. The guarantees for powdered milk replacers are much higher because the numbers listed are the nutrient values prior to the water being added. If you look at the values for moisture on the labels, you’ll notice that the moisture level on the can of ready-to-serve liquid is much higher than on the can of powder. Once you reconstitute the powder with water, the fat and protein levels should be similar to those shown on the label of the ready-to-use liquid.
We recommend that a newborn puppy or kitten be fed 2 tablespoons of ready to feed liquid or 2 tablespoons of reconstituted (water added to the powder to make a liquid) powder milk replacer for every 4 ounces of body weight over a 24-hour period. For example, if your puppy weighs 8 ounces it needs to be fed 4 tablespoons of formula over a 24 hour period.
Each of our PetAg formulas are formulated for the nutritional needs of the species, so they are not interchangeable.
No. If possible, puppies/ kittens should receive colostrum by nursing from their mother for a minimum of 2 days. Many milk replacers with added colostrum are derived from cow’s milk. Colostrum is species specific so the benefits to a puppy or kitten, if any, are difficult to determine.
No. We are required by regulations to show certain nutrient values on the label so that the consumer can see what the values for typical nutrients – crude protein, crude fat, crude fiber, moisture, energy (calories) – are in our products. We are also required to list the ingredients of the product on the label. The ingredients will show the consumer what additional vitamins and minerals are added to the product, but not the amounts in the finished product. The amount of individual nutrients that are in a product (other than those listed on the label) are what we call “proprietary”. In other words, not available to the consumer, even when requested.
No. Both liquid and powder milk replacers are perishable products that should not be fed after the expiration date.
The PetAg product known as Bene-Bac contains the prebiotic fructooligosaccharide (FOS) and five probiotics. Prebiotics are non-digestible food ingredients that stimulate the growth and/or activity of beneficial microorganisms, such as bacteria, in the gut. FOS are a type of oligosaccharide composed of short chains of fructose (a type of sugar) molecules, and they serve as a substrate for beneficial bacteria in the gut, particularly bifidobacteria and lactobacilli (contained in Bene-Bac, classified as probiotics). By promoting the growth of these beneficial bacteria, FOS contribute to gut health and may confer various health benefits, such as improved digestion and immune function. Therefore, they are commonly classified as prebiotics. Probiotics are live microorganisms, typically bacteria or yeast. These microorganisms are similar to the beneficial bacteria that naturally reside in the gut and play important roles in maintaining gut health and overall well-being. When consumed, probiotics can help restore or maintain a healthy balance of gut microbiota, aid in digestion, support immune function, and potentially offer other health benefits.
There is no precut opening so that the caregiver can make the opening the appropriate size for the age and species of the animal in their care.
